After the LAME:
September 1st 2006
It’s early Friday morning and I’m sitting in the Burbank airport, waiting for my flight to Cleveland (going to a wedding) and reading a book about Paul’s Boutique.
I’m reading a page (pg. 21 I think) regarding some of the other rappers who were using tracks from the Dust Brothers at the time, such as Tone-Loc…and I’m looking down at the book reading…and I hear this really gravelly voice from across the aisle…and I’m like “no fuckin’ way”…
Sure enough, I look up and Tone fuckin’ Loc is sitting down across from me. I guess he was headed here. So I look down at the book again, turning back to the previous page to read his name again, look back up, and just shake my head and think “you have got to be shitting me”.
So, dumbfounded, I asked him if he was Tone-Loc and he says yes and I’m like “man, you aren’t gonna believe this…” and I go over and tell him I’m reading this book and he’s mentioned and I just read his name and heard his voice at damn near the same time and he says “Word?”. I showed him the book and tell him that I’m reading about Matt Dike, a DJ/Producer/label owner who kind of got the Paul’s Boutique ball rolling. He was also described as a recluse, possibly addicted to drugs, whose friends would throw food over the fence of his yard just to make sure he was eating...Anyway, I mentioned his name to Tone (Mr. Loc?) and he says “Oh, Matty? Is that cat still alive?”…and I’m like “I dunno, I haven’t read that far yet”.
i look forward to rejoining society
